2010 Mining Technology Workshop Southwest Training Services, Inc. co-sponsored a five-day 'Careers in Mining Technology Camp' for high school students interested in exploring a mining technology or engineering career, July 26 - 30, 2010, at the Westmoreland County Community College-Greene County Education Center, in Waynesburg. During the camp, students gained information on careers in the mining industry; obtained first aid and CPR certificates; learned about the history of mining; studied geology; saw mining equipment; took a field trip to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health in Pittsburgh; learned about mine safety and working with safety equipment; heard about mine rescue techniques; learned about environmental issues related to mining; met students from other schools; and experienced a FREE Penn State University Class in Greene County. Other camp sponsors included the Southwest Corner Workforce Investment Board, Penn State – Fayette, and Westmoreland County Community College-Greene County Education Center, in conjunction with the following PA Mining Industry Partnership employers: American Infrastructure; Bucyrus; Cleveland Brothers Equipment; CONSOL Energy; Joy Mining Machinery; PA Services Corp., an affiliate of Alpha Natural Resources; and RG Johnson.
